Really cool place. I've enjoyed working here using some background in applied math. Great people to work with. Very clean facility with a good cafe. There is also a little library with meteorology books and the dissertation from the students here as well. Some cool fine arts display inside the building too. So be looking for them.
Jessica Cavin gives a great educational tour of the National Weather Center in Norman OK. Well worth a drive from Texas or from anywhere. Highly recommended.
Huge building but well built. First floor tourist accessible. Easy traffic access.
Meteorology fans will like this.
The National Weather Center is on the campus of Oklahoma State University, and is an impressive 6 story modern building housing the Storm Prediction Center, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and several other weather related government entities. Tours are led be meteorology grad students, last 90 minutes, and give you the highlights of the facility. You can buy souvenirs or have a snack at the "Flying Cow" Cafe!
We went today and met some really cool people a lot of news stations were here and we had a lot of fun. This was our very first time to come here and it was well worth it the grounds were clean and beautiful. 👍👍 …
I really enjoyed this tour. Jessica was an awesome tour guide and the facility is impressive and it was a detailed tour. It made for a very fun filled day and I am very appreciative of friendly staff.
Hello!?! WEATHER FESTIVAL.
Okay, first off let me get this out of the way! My nerd radar is redlining! This place is frikken AWESOME! The grounds are so well kept and the water features are relaxing and maintained. Did you know the storm prediction center is here? There’s a tornado lab? A tornado simulator? A dopler lab? They have their own hashtag #OKWX
What?!? I know! Awesomeness, right?!
Okay, okay, I gotta calm down. Once a year there’s a festival held here with all the local meteorologists and helicopters and it’s literally the only time you can come inside, walk around and get super acquainted with the ever changing, and sometimes deadly, weather in the great state of Oklahoma. Other than that, it’s pretty much on lock down so don’t be upset if the staff won’t let you wonder around. Friend them on FB for information on the next yearly festival usually held in November.
Our visit to the National Weather Center facility was eye opening. You realize that daily weather and severe storms for the US are tracked and forecasted somewhere but this was a great opportunity to better understand who actually does these activities.
The center is a multilevel facility with computers, monitors and smart people everywhere. There were storm trackers being outfitted with sophisticated radar in the garage. They even had actual weather equipment used in the movie “Twister” on display. The facility is on the University of Oklahoma campus so next time you’re there to catch a game, don’t hesitate to absorb technology at it’s finest.
